Wayne State College is a four-year public college in Wayne, which is the county seat of Wayne County, in the US state of Nebraska, having a popuation estimated at a number of more than 5 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Wayne State was established in 1910, first starting as a State Normal School, and it adopted its current name in 1963, after being known as State Normal School and Teacher's College, in 1921, and Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne, in 1949.
The college currently has an enrollment of over 3500 students, and offers 90 different programs of study, through 4 schools: Business and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Education and Counseling, and Natural and Social Sciences, also offering classes at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska.
Wayne State's athletic teams are known as the Wildcats, who compete in 15 NCAA Division II sports, in NSIC, including in football and women's basketball, for which sports are, perhaps, best known.
Among Wayne State's noteworthy alumni, there are: John Neihardt - writer and poet, Poet Laureate of Nebraska, author of Black Elk Speaks, Kevin Swayne - AFL and NFL wide receiver, Val Peterson - U.S. political figure, Hilda Neihardt - history author and daughter of John G.
